Character Analysis

Steve Harmon is a 16 year old Black male who lives in Harlem. Steve is the narrator of the story. He uses a screenplay that he writes while in jail. He also communicates through a journal, displaying his inner most thoughts. With all the role models in his life, such as his dad, mom, and film teacher, he chooses the route that leads to no where. He chooses to emulate poor role models, such as Bobo, and James King who he thinks are tough and strong but who are actually just street thugs. This decision proves sour as he soon is part of a fatal robbery. While in jail he tries to justify the past decision he's made and come to the conclusion that he did nothing wrong. He must find out if he is, or is not, indeed a Monster.
